Total Loss CIP Systems

Introduction

The total loss philosophy is that all of the fluids applied to clean the equipment are used only once and then sent to waste after the cleaning is finished.

Usage

This is the normal system used for high value, high risk products. It is extensively used in the Pharmaceutical and Bio sectors, for example, and for the less frequent and more critical cleaning tasks in other sectors.

Running Costs

This type of CIP has the highest running costs.

Types

The two major variants of total loss are total loss – recirculation and total loss – single use. The recirculation example delivers the main wash to the equipment and then recirculates it through the CIP system to re-apply the same fluid. The single use philosophy does not recirculate. It simply sends the liquid to the equipment and it is sent to drain after a ‘single use’. The ‘single use’ philosophy is less common and is used primarily if arranging a return from the equipment being cleaned is difficult or when toxic and other un-desirable products are being cleaned.
